Thanks Jim, the answer is - sometimes. After I work out, I either go out with family and enjoy those foods i love, and sometimes i go out several hours later. But I get your point - deliver the protein to my body asap after the workout. Thanks!

Hey Anthony. It comes down to this. Are you jumping into your cheat meals right after your workout? if the answer is yes, your ribs, hot dogs and even pizza will deliver more than enough protein to your hungry muscles...So, no shake needed...

If on the other hand, you're waiting a while before the indulging begins, a protein shake will still apply to the principles of nutrient timing.

Thanks Anthony!

Best,
James

Hi guys. First time looking at your site. I have a question, but here's some background on me. I lived a sedentary life. January 2011, I weighed 298. Refusing to break that 300lb mark, I started working out. Being 41 years old, I've been around during the Arnold M&F days, so im familure with what I need to do. I work out 4-5 days per week and watch my diet all week long, eating health, tuna, chicken, salmon, etc... keeping my carbs down. I drink a whey protein shake with water at 5am - eat very light throughout the day (multiple small meals), work out around 4pm and my post workout shake consists of 5000 creatine and Protoplex (poor mans version of Myoplex) from Vitamine World. Today - May 7, 2011, I weigh 278 and feel great.

My question is this. I have a cheat day every Saturday or Sunday. (only one of those days is my cheat day). But, I workout on my cheat day to reduce my chances of weight gain. When I workout on Saturday, around 10am, should I still drink my post workout shake (Protoplex) even though Im cheating (with either pizza or hot dogs or wings or beer or ribs etc... you get the point)

Am I overdoing it by drinking this shake after the workout even though im stuffing myself with high fat foods? Should I eliminate my post workout shake on those cheat days?

I'd recommend about a 20% deficit on the 5 clean days -- keep in mind, you can also zig zag these days slightly as well, if you'd like. For example, maybe you're at a 15% deficit on one day, then a 25% deficit (lower carbs) the next, etc...

Personally, I've found that anything much more extreme really cuts into my workout performance, which in turn leads to less calorie burning both during and after the workouts -- so if that's the case, it's kinda a wash anyways, ya know? Give 20% a shot and see how it goes. Good luck...

Yooooo Brad!

I have been reading about your cheat day/fast day approach for a while and have decided to give it a try. I did a full on cheat day yesterday, and I am on my full day fast as I am typing this out. I wanted to know how much of a deficit I should be in throughout the clean eating days in order to lose 1% bodyfat per week. I'm currently at around 15-16% bodyfat and would like to get down to 12% as quickly as possible.

Please help me out man.

Thanks

Hey Matt - you can start it whenever, but you have to make sure it's for at least 8-10 hrs and that it's uninterrupted. So doing 1/2 day of cheating, then sleeping and waking up to finish your cheat day would NOT work. This is because the duration of increased calories needs to be steady for a solid 8-10 hours to effectively increase leptin levels.

So you can start it later in the day and cheat up until bedtime, but don't sleep then resume cheating the next day, as this would be more likely to lead to fat gain.

Great question.

Yo Brad,

A quick question:

When should I start a cheat day?

Can i start it at, say, 3PM then cheat all afternoon, evening, SLEEP (technically a fast???!), then get up and cheat all morning and for lunch??

OR... Do I HAVE TO start it at,like, 8AM and cheat until I go to sleep then fast the next day after I get up?!

Please advise as this has been bugging me for ages!!!!

Nice one brother,
